Evaluate uncertain demand with separate workload scenarios. A conservative case should use established work; an expected case can add justified assumptions; a growth case shows possibilities without disguising them as orders. This makes the investment's dependence on future sales visible.

Build a conservative workload scenario

List confirmed repeat parts and their recent order patterns. Estimate the work the proposed system could handle within that group, using the intended automated coverage rather than the entire manual production time.

Then prepare a second scenario for plausible growth. Keep the assumptions visible. A proposal that works only when every forecast order arrives should be recognized as a different decision from one supported by established demand.

Look for relevant alternative work

When one product slows, could another reviewed family use the same system? That possibility is worth exploring, but only if the geometry, process, and setup requirements are understood.

Do not count every drawing in the database as potential utilization. Miller discusses robotic welding opportunities in smaller shops; the purchasing task is to identify the specific work that makes such an opportunity real in your operation.

A workload scenario example

The following figures are hypothetical candidate welding hours, not robot capacity or a financial forecast.

The proposed robot workload must still be calculated from its actual coverage and complete production method. Current welding hours describe the opportunity, not the number of robot hours or labor hours automatically saved.

Do not hide idle time with unreviewed drawings

A cell may serve another family when one product slows, but only if the second family's process and presentation have been considered. A long product catalog is not evidence that all of it can fill unused time.

Keep approved work, technically plausible work awaiting review, and unrelated work in separate groups. This avoids making a business case appear resilient by assigning the same unspecified future demand to every scenario.

Identify the uncertainty that matters most

Demand uncertainty, application uncertainty, and staffing uncertainty require different next steps. More sales history can clarify the first; a representative application review addresses the second; a defined operating plan addresses the third. A robot demonstration does not resolve all three.
