Upgrade a 6-Axis Welding Cell or Change the Application?

Replace a welding robot only after identifying the limitation the replacement would address. Seven-axis articulation is relevant to arm-configuration problems, but it does not automatically resolve insufficient reach, a blocked torch opening, or a production bottleneck outside welding.

Identify where the existing method falls short

List the seams that are inaccessible, the work that remains manual, and the handling steps that make the process difficult. Distinguish those issues from insufficient demand, an unsuitable welding process, or an awkward material flow.

Use the actual assembly and current arrangement as the reference. A general impression that the robot is not flexible enough needs to become a specific description of the motion or coverage that is missing.

Consider what another joint changes

Kassow's seven-axis design adds elbow-positioning freedom. That can be relevant when arm configuration restricts an otherwise suitable torch approach.

It does not inherently solve every issue associated with the existing cell. A seam outside the selected robot's usable reach, a blocked joint, or a different process requirement needs its own review. Ask for evidence that the proposed extra articulation addresses the actual limitation.

A diagnostic comparison

Elbow or arm link interferes
First question: Is a suitable tool pose otherwise available?
Possible direction to investigate: Another configuration, mounting concept, or seven-axis arm
Torch itself cannot fit
First question: Is the opening compatible with the required tool approach?
Possible direction to investigate: Tool or part-presentation concept

Possible direction to investigate: Robot model, mounting location, or part placement
Output is low despite workable access
First question: Where does time or work wait in the complete route?
Possible direction to investigate: Process-flow or operating-plan change

These are review directions, not instructions to modify an existing cell without the appropriate engineering assessment.

Worked example: an upgrade that misses the issue

Imagine an existing robot that welds its assigned seams consistently but waits for assembled parts. Replacing the arm with one offering more articulation does not automatically improve that supply constraint. The additional capability could be real while remaining irrelevant to the observed output problem.

Now consider an assembly left manual because the required torch pose causes an arm-link interference. The seventh joint provides a more relevant alternative to evaluate. The cases call for different evidence, even though both initially appear as dissatisfaction with the current cell.

State the capability gained

A replacement proposal should identify the newly included welds, changed handling sequence, or other specific improvement and compare it against the current method. Use the same difficult part, not a different easy demonstration.

For Spartan's seven-axis approach, the strongest case is a demonstrated solution to the relevant geometry. That is more useful than assuming that six-axis equipment should be replaced simply because an additional joint is available.
